HubSpot Outlines Benchmarks for AI Search Visibility

HubSpot says marketers need citation and share-of-voice measures alongside traditional search metrics to benchmark AI search visibility.

Marketers are struggling to measure their performance in AI search, according to HubSpot’s State of AEO 2026 report. HubSpot’s benchmarking guide recommends looking beyond conventional search rankings to assess how frequently brands and their content appear in answers generated by AI search tools.

Measurement was the most frequently reported answer engine optimization challenge among B2B marketers in the report, cited by 23% of respondents. Among B2C marketers, 26% identified measurement as a challenge. The only issue cited more often by that group was understanding how AEO works, at 29%.

Traditional search data remains useful, but it captures a different part of the user journey. Rankings show where a page appears in search results, while tools such as Google Search Console report clicks and impressions. Website visits show whether people reached a site. None of those measures alone establishes how often an answer engine names a brand or attributes information to its website.

HubSpot distinguishes between mentions and citations. A mention names a brand in an AI-generated response without linking to a source. A citation attributes information to a source or provides a link; for the guide’s brand-level measure, the source or linked URL must come from the brand’s own domain. That distinction matters when comparing visibility, because a brand can be named in an answer without its website being cited.

The guide recommends using measures such as citation rate and share of voice to compare a brand’s presence with competitors. It also calls for normalizing results across answer engines and prompts, then presenting the benchmarks in a form leadership can use. The aim is to move beyond isolated prompt checks toward a repeatable assessment that can inform an improvement plan.

Changes in search presentation also make click data important to interpret. Ahrefs found that the appearance of a Google AI Overview was associated with a 58% lower average click-through rate for the top-ranked page in its December 2025 analysis. The finding describes a correlation; it does not establish that the AI Overview caused the decline.

What this means for marketers

Keep tracking rankings, impressions and visits, but assess AI search visibility separately. Distinguish brand mentions from citations, compare results with competitors, and use a consistent approach across prompts and answer engines so benchmarks can be revisited and explained to leadership.
