What RAG Means for AI Answers and Marketing Visibility

Retrieval-augmented generation uses external information to ground AI answers, making source visibility a concern for marketers.

As more people turn to AI for answers, marketers face a question beyond whether their content appears in a list of search results: whether it is used in the response itself. HubSpot’s guide to retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG, explains one way AI systems draw on outside information and why that process matters for brand visibility.

RAG is a method in which an AI system retrieves relevant material from an external knowledge base before generating an answer. The retrieved material is added to the model’s prompt, giving it source information to use when composing its response. That additional context can help ground the answer in the material the system has found.

The distinction is between responding from information absorbed during model training and consulting a source before answering. For marketers, the point is that the content an AI system retrieves may influence what it says about a category or brand. The sources behind an answer may not be obvious to the person receiving it.

This matters as AI-generated summaries become part of the search experience. In a 2025 analysis of browsing data from 900 U.S. adults, Pew Research Center found that users clicked a traditional search result on 8% of visits when Google displayed an AI summary. The figure was 15% for visits without a summary.

Those findings suggest the answer shown on the results page can carry more weight when fewer users follow links. They do not establish that a particular page will be selected by an AI system. HubSpot notes that making content easier for machines to access can help, but it does not guarantee that the content will be retrieved or cited.

What this means for marketers

Assess content with AI retrieval in mind as well as conventional search visibility. A strong page remains valuable, but marketers also need to understand how systems find and select source material. Treat machine accessibility as a way to support that process, not as a promise that a brand will appear in an AI-generated answer or receive a citation.
